If you’re ready to take on a new role in this exciting industry, KDS Staffing has the inside track with industry leaders offering these phenomenal opportunities. We form lasting relationships that change lives for the better every day. Here are some of the best high tech jobs around, and what it takes to be successful in each.
1. IT Manager
As head of an organization’s IT Department, you’re the person responsible for all things technology-related. You guide your organization’s vision and direction regarding its technology goals, and handle tasks necessary to keep things running smoothly on a daily basis. You negotiate service contracts with vendors, protect your company network from hackers, install, maintain and update the company’s software, and maintain the hardware. You also have the necessary technical expertise to do the various jobs within your department.
The great thing about this position is the demand; everyone needs an IT Manager. With over 50,000 job openings anticipated in this area, there is a wide range of organizations to choose from, and with a median salary in the six figure range, it’s a good place to be.
2. Civil Engineer
Civil engineers get to design some pretty cool stuff (think the Sydney Opera House and Eiffel Tower) as well as things we need to get around every day like roads, airports, railways, and bridges. This is one of the largest divisions of the engineering industry, and if you like designing, experimenting and building things from the ground up, this area may interest you.
Having an affinity for numbers will serve you well in this field, as you’ll be responsible for estimating labor and equipment costs for various projects. The Labor Department predicts almost 20% employment growth in this field before 2022.
3. Computer Systems Administrator
With a median salary in the high five figures, this is a popular segment of the technology industry. If keeping lines of communication open, maintaining multiple networks and dealing with equipment updates gets you excited, this is a great job for you. In this position you not only maintain company computer networks in good working order, but you will probably set them up in the first place.
In today’s marketplace, this deals increasingly with keeping remote employees connected and staying on top of emerging technologies that allow employees to work from home or while traveling. There is a growing need for good systems administrators, with more organizations budgeting for new technologies and faster networks.
4. Database Administrator
Database Administrators (DBAs) set up and maintain a company’s database. This includes installing and maintaining any upgrades and/or modifications. If you like the challenge of resolving often complex issues, love solving problems and thrive on dealing in details, you just found your dream job.
In this position, you’ll likely find your days filled with testing and fine tuning your company’s database, along with a team of programmers and managers. You may be required to be on call, which could mean working longer than 40 hours a week. If you don’t want to be tied to a desk, you can work on retainer or as a consultant to more than one organization.
5. Computer Programmer
These skilled individuals tell computers what to do, in their own language. Programmers write the commands that direct a computer’s actions, and are responsible for many of the leaps and bounds made in the IT world. According to Jeff Lyons, founder and president of the National Association of Programmers:
“ Today, our very young children play with devices with more computing power than was available to launch all of the Apollo missions that landed men on the moon. Even the most nontechnical persons can easily utilize these devices to access the collective knowledge of mankind.”
Because this job often entails many hours working alone with a computer, many programmers work remotely. Their work is extremely detailed, and projects can take anywhere from a few days to several months to complete. This profession is expected to see continued growth and a rising median salary.
