Renowned motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said “You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want”.
In order to have the job you want, you have to be the best candidate. Approaching an interview by asking yourself how you can best help the company get what they want just might land you the job. Here are five useful tips that can help you have an impressive interview.
- Be Confident
You only have one chance to make a good first impression, so make it a good one. Make eye contact, smile, and give a firm handshake. Let the interviewer take the lead, and don’t appear anxious. Relax, enjoy yourself, and don’t try to impress the person behind the desk. Remember, they have most likely been in your position. The interviewer’s goal is not to make you uncomfortable; they are simply attempting to find the best person for the job.
- Be Knowledgeable
Research the company before your interview, and be knowledgeable enough to ask relevant questions. Understand the company goals and culture, and demonstrate your knowledge of the company and its products or services during your interview. This show you are truly interested in and on track with the company’s mission.
- Be Attentive
Listen carefully to everything your interviewer tells you about the company, and don’t interrupt. You may hear key phrases that tell you exactly what they need, why the position you’re applying for is available, and perhaps even what has been missing previously. This will help you tailor your responses to answer the paramount question: are you the ideal candidate?
- Be Different
The person interviewing you may have seen several other candidates that day, so be different. Indicate your willingness to learn, convey your enthusiasm for the opportunity to become part of their team, and promote yourself without bragging. Arrogance is not impressive, but confidence and enthusiasm are, and can help you win the day. When it’s your turn to speak, you might ask the interviewer’s opinion as to the key element needed to succeed in the position you are interviewing for, and listen carefully to the response.
Ziglar also said “The choice to have a great attitude is something that nobody or no circumstance can take from you”.
- Be Thankful
Whether or not you are hired, be thankful for the chance to interview and express your thanks in writing. The art of the handwritten note has all but disappeared with the advent of email and texts, but it could be impactful enough to move your name to the top of the candidate list. Take the time to write a note thanking the interviewer for the time spent with you, and for considering you for the open position. If your handwriting is illegible, use a script font and print your note out on a blank card. Mail or hand deliver your note as soon as possible after the interview.
